Lent Course

‘February Journeying through Lent ‘is a booklet which we will be using during Lent. It contains  Bible verses, comments and questions to think about and it costs £3 and can be obtained from Beryl or Val.  We will be using the notes as a basis for our Lent course, but if you don’t want to join a group, you may just like to follow it at home on your own. The Lent course will meet for 5 weeks on Wednesdays starting on 21st Feb at 2.15 in the prayer chapel.

ALL WE CAN

February is the month I send a reminder out to those who put aside 50p per week for ALL WE CAN for their PARTNER CHURCH Scheme.  Every 6 months each of us pass on our 50p, ie £13 ( not £26 for 6 months.  £26 is for the whole year.)  or thereabout, to Margaret, our treasurer.  (by bank transfer, cheque or cash)

I have just received a certificate from ALL WE CAN to say we donated £760 in 2023. When we signed on to the scheme we promised £500 per year.

So VERY MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. Julia

Update from Methodist centre.

After letting “Caring for Christmas” use the premises over Christmas, and as a result having a lot of damage done, especially wrecking the cooker and a lot of cutlers and pots went missing.  The centre now has a new cooker fitted and replacement utensils.    Caring for Christmas have agreed to pay for the damage, so they are up and running again.

The Methodist Centre has been providing sleeping accommodation under the severe weather protocol funded by the council.  The NHS have been in to test guests for hepatitis,

Collection Basket

The Church Council discussed a change in the way our offerings are collected. As there are pros and cons for each method, it was decided to keep to our present way, with the basket at the entry door. (This corrects the information you read in the sheet last week!)

A REQUEST!

It is connected with the “CELEBRATING UGANDA & HER NEIGHBOURS EVENT” to be held at Badminton Road on Saturday afternoon, 27th January.

We shall be serving a Cuppa with a Cake.  So, if anyone would like to contribute a Cake it would be very gratefully received.  You are all very welcome to come and have a Cuppa and a Cake.

Many thanks. Julia

I am writing to you for my father, Brin Jones and I’m afraid I have some sad news to tell you.
Mum and Dad were each taken into Southmead hospital last Wednesday. Luckily I was coming to Bristol on Wednesday anyway and Howard came on Thursday. Both Mum and Dad  have  been quite poorly recently with heart related illness.  They were eventually taken to the same ward but were not together.

Four days later Dad is still very poorly in hospital, but improving slightly. I’m sorry to say Mum passed away quietly in her sleep last night. She was not in any pain or distress.

Howard and I have spent a lot of time with them recently, including celebrating Dad’s 96th birthday and their 70th wedding anniversary at the end of December. Eleanor

PLEASE NOTE

It was decided by the Leadership team that next Sunday and on following Sundays, we will no longer leave a Collection basket by the door to the Worship area; instead, we will resume our practice of taking up and dedicating the offerings during our services.          Thank you

Messy Church is next Saturday 20th January from 4.00 – 5.30 p.m.  Please pray for the team and the families who will attend.

Today’s prayer from the Prayer Diary

Heavenly Father, we know that your heart breaks for those who are homeless, struggling with addiction, who are hungry and cold, fearful or lonely, trapped in abusive relationships and caught in modern slavery.  Father, break our hearts for what breaks yours. Amen

We raised £230 for the Parkway gift appeal, which they thank us for. Unfortunately, we were too late for this year. They gave gifts to 130 families at the beginning of December but will keep the money “ring fenced” for next year.

This letter was in my newspaper this week: Gentle wrath of God: “For clergy up and down

The land, the phrase “This must be your busy time” is often heard this month.  However, this year has taught Rev Dr David Hoyle, the Dean of Westminster’ that Christmas is light relief. “The coronation was a busy time,” he said at Westminster Abbey’s Christmas concert. Before an evening of beautiful music, he issued a warning to the assembled that there would be low tolerance for any mobile phones going off.  Hoyle warned that stern-faced clerics would descend on anyone responsible for a ringtone,  “And then,” he said, “In line with company policy, you will be forgiven.” PH

To Badminton Road.

Thank you very much to the Church Family for all your love, prayers, and support over the past month since Tony died.

Many of you I know, were involved in preparing the premises for is thanksgiving service and the refreshments that followed. It made such a difference, helping to make the day run smoothly and the family greatly appreciated that.

Thank you once again from myself and the whole family.

Also, I had a phone call from Jean Doggett in Birmingham. She sends her Christmas Greetings to all her friends at Badminton Road and wishes us all a peaceful New Year. Sue

Gift/Toy service.

We did not plan for a specific Sunday this year (My fault, sorry) so we are asking for donations this week and next week to go to Parkway Methodist Church.  They will then buy age-appropriate gifts for needy families in Bristol which have been highlighted by social services.

Thank you in advance for your generosity. Val

To all the lovely church members at Badminton Road.

What a lovely surprise I had on Monday when so many turned up to say thank you to me for my 50 years guiding at Badminton Road. I don’t know where the years have gone! Also thank you for the lovely cards, flowers and presents. I am not disappearing for good and once Terry has had both hips replaced I will be able to help out at church events. Thank you all for the support and love I have received during the 50 years. Jackie Meech

Visit to Ruth Eagle:

Susan Fenton and I (Susanne Old ) visited Ruth Eagle a week  ago. My husband very kindly took us. Ruth is in Kingswood Court Nursing Home. She has been in there for a couple of weeks so really is still settling in. She was pleased to see us but I believe she was feeling tired. Her neighbour had been into visit her earlier in the day. Her son Robert came down from Nottingham to visit her. Her other son Tim is due to visit too.  I am sure that Ruth would be delighted to see any of her friends, who were able to visit her. I know that Val and Roger plan to take Susan next time.  Susanne Old

There is a large red robin Christmas card for the congregation to write their greetings to each other which is free and helps save the planet as we are all being eco-friendly and jolly at the same time. It will be on the information table all of December. Heather
